Out of the trenches

  • A query intensive

Stop wondering if your query will land.
Learn how to ensure it will.

It all starts July 8

This is not querying 101

No guesswork, no outdated advice.
Just actionable steps for today’s market, informed by years of industry experience.

You’ve been in the Querying Trenches before. You wrote, revised, and queried, and it didn’t go as planned. I get it. I’ve been working with querying authors since 2009. Trends come and go, but one thing stays the same:

Querying sucks.

But the next manuscript you query really can be different. I don’t have a magic wand, but I do have a ton of experience, successful traditionally published clients, and a nearly compulsive need to tell people what I know about subjects I’m passionate about.

Querying is so much more than hitting Submit. It’s strategic, informed, and actionable. That’s why I created this Query Intensive, to help authors who are serious about a career in publishing to bridge the gap between a polished manuscript and the reality of publishing opportunities. This intensive is about more than how to write a query that grabs an agent’s attention. Participants will get true insight into what agents are thinking about when they read your materials, a deeper understanding of the big picture of publishing and what the author’s role is, and the skills to use that information to position your manuscript effectively.

You’ll finish this intensive with a polished, market-ready query package and the confidence to submit, backed by proven resources, strategy, a small community of querying authors like you, and all the aggressive encouragement you can handle.

Hello, Friend

I'm Jeni Chappelle. I've been called a manuscript wizard, book doula, and story godmother.

But really, I'm a giant story nerd who loves that moment when an author's brain lights up with understanding and reignites their passion for writing.

I've collaborated on thousands of manuscripts and query packages since 2009 through my editorial business and my volunteer work with RevPit and other organizations. I've made it my job to know what agents notice, how to prepare your materials for submission, and how to give you an edge in the market. I have also curated and created dozens of resources and tools to make revising simpler for authors who are serious about their craft.

I'm bringing all of that to this Query Intensive, and the plan is to dump everything out of my brain into yours so you can benefit from my knowledge, skills, and experience.

I am a human, and I support humans. Read my AI Policy.

Confident Queries, Real Results

Jeni is a true master

Nadine Flint, 2025 RevPit Winner

Jeni is a true master at breaking down the elusive world of book pitching into digestible chunks. Don't be fooled, this course doesn't just teach you about how to create a query package. Rather, Jeni pulls the veil to explain the role of an agent, what materials they need to compile when pitching to editors, and how strategic tweaks to your query package and agent list can give your book its best chance of finding a good business fit. She discusses market trends and how being aware of them isn't the same thing as sacrificing your work, but rather a tool to position your work. Filled with industry knowledge that only comes with years in the business, this course is a must for any writer.

Stand out in the slush pile

RJ

Since taking this class I've found a position reading for an agency. Things that Jeni presents in this class are the things that I see writers struggle with in the inbox. How do you accurately show an agent what to expect and hook them in a short query letter? How do comps show why this idea is marketable? How do you hook agents within 5 pages with agency, stakes, and voice? Jeni does all of this and more! If you want to stand out in the slush pile, this is the class that will ensure you put your story's best foot forward. I think any writer who is serious about starting their career should start right here with Jeni.

Such a valuable opportunity!

Jeni's class helped me fine-tune and improve my overall query package. Querying will never be exact or perfect, but this class helped demystify and cut out some of the guesswork before entering the trenches. Such a valuable opportunity!

Just the right thing at just the right time

Chelsea E.

This was just the right thing at just the right time. I've query twice before, and I came into this course on the eve of my third querying attempt. After countless blogs, workshops, craft books, and advice from friends, I felt like all the information on querying was the same. But this is different! We go beyond the structure of the query and synopsis to discuss strategy and really understanding the job of a literary agent -- all of which served to better the query package. Jeni delivers information in an approachable style that I found very easy to follow and absorb. Her examples are relevant and up-to-date, and homework assignments helped progress my query package to something very nearly ready for The Trenches!

I was unaware of how many things I still had to learn

Chloe M.

After querying three books, while I definitely didn't consider myself a pro at all things querying, I was unaware of how many things I still had to learn beyond what you can find on websites and through beta readers. Being a part of Jeni's class highlighted the shortcomings I didn't know I had, while also providing the actual substance of how to correct them.

Fresh perspective on the querying process

Kim B.

Jeni's Query Intensive offered a fresh perspective on the querying process that highlighted an agent's lens as a means to create an effective query package. With informative videos, helpful examples, and opportunities for feedback, this comprehensive intensive examined all aspects of the querying process and provided industry tips. This experience was incredibly valuable, and I feel much more prepared to query thanks to the information and strategies I learned from Jeni.

"Jeni was undoubtedly a key player in my manuscript’s success."

FAQ

Do I need a finished manuscript?

Yes, your manuscript should be complete or nearly complete.

No, this is about query prep, not manuscript critique. You can, however, get feedback via the live feedback session. I also have a special offer on a bundle for private feedback.

You will have access to all videos and resource materials for the duration of the intensive.

This query intensive is very much geared toward authors who are querying novels, and some of the advice doesn’t apply to other types of books (picture books, graphic novels, nonfiction, poetry, etc.).

I’m going to give you all the tools you need to write the best query to put your best foot forward. But querying relies on a lot of factors, so anyone guaranteeing this should be a giant red flag.

I do not offer refunds.

This is called a Query Intensive because it is fast-paced. Each week is packed full of information, and if you fall behind, it may be difficult to catch up before the Q&A and live feedback session.

AI POLICY

I never use generative AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT. Not in my editing, not in my classes, not in my emails, not in my social media.

By registering for this intensive, you certify that you own the rights to all the materials you submit. AI-generated content is not protected by Intellectual Property Law and so can not be included in such a certification. If an AI-based tool wrote the actual content of the manuscript, query letter, synopsis, or logline, it is considered “AI-generated,” even if a person edited the text substantially afterward. If an author created their own content and then used AI tools like grammar checkers and/or plotting/outlining tools, then it is considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.”

If you’ve been asking yourself

How can I make this round of querying a success?

This query intensive is for you.
